From Public Data to Public Good
One of our flagship projects was the Istanbul Vulnerability Map, which went far beyond analyzing the COVID-19 crisis. It identified Istanbul’s most fragile neighborhoods and streets in the face of future socio-economic, spatial, and logistical risks, offering a concrete roadmap for local decision-makers.
In another project, we built a full-scale data warehouse, analytical infrastructure, and BI system to help decision-makers make sense of Istanbul’s public transportation data. Developed entirely with open-source tools (such as TimescaleDB and Airflow), this system analyzed traffic and mobility data down to the smallest time segments — revealing usage patterns, peak-hour congestion, and systemic risks.
Within the framework of smart city development and data-driven urban governance, we also modelled different disaster scenarios and developed resilience-focused strategies to strengthen transport continuity in times of crisis. This demonstrated that open-source technologies are not only technically powerful but can deliver tangible public value as well. We will be sharing more details about this work in future Medium posts.
Beyond infrastructure and analysis, we’ve also led large-scale thematic social research projects, helping reveal key insights into the everyday lives of Istanbul’s residents — from consumption patterns to economic resilience. These findings have directly supported the development of more responsive and data-driven urban policies.
